Hello so i just got a dual internal overflow 125 gallon tank with a tank sump but i don't understand how the sump actually works with plumbing and so forth. Ive never had a drilled tank and i would like to do freshwater tank with a sump for better filtration.

Can anyone provide me some input on how this works, how should i do the plumbing? so from what i understand the water enters the overflow from the teeth and flows into the overflow and into the sump tank, goes through filtration and the pump flows it back into the tank. so do i need a pvc pipe from the bulkhead that puts water back in the tank over the overflow box to put water back in the tank? do i need anything for the bulkhead that allows water into the sump? with a dual overflow how would i do the plumbing? im confused on how the plumbing works and so forth? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

The big one is your drain Id run a pice of PVC at least 3/4 of the way otherwise it's gonna be real noisy. The smaller one is for your return so you are gonna have to run PVC up all the way and jet it out of the overflow It didn't come with any of the pieces to hook it up? So your drains coming off the bottom of the tank you can run whatever you want. Either PVC or flex tubing or corrugated sump pump tubing works good too The two returns if your running one pump you can just tee the pump with flexible tubing to each bulkhead at the bottom of the tank.

so if it's a dual overflow you should have 2 drains and 2 returns. that smaller one is the return. normally you will fit a pvc pipe onto the smaller hole and then use lock Line to go over top of the overflow box. you will need to use pvc pipe again to get water into the sump

ahh i c no piping came with the tank just some flex tubing at the end that were cut off...now once Ive tee the drains can i just place the pvc or tubing submersed directly in my sump so i dont hear anything or does it have to be above my sump? would it cause a reverse syphon if i fully submersed the drainage piping in my sump? also with the return does it have to be above the water level so a reverse flow doesn't happen if the pump turns off?

what is a recommended pump for a tank and sump my size?

Yes, with the drains, from the bulkhead to the sump, make it so the drains are below the water level in the sump to cut noise level. With the return lines, put a check valve in it, and water won't drain into the sump through the drain lines when the pumps turn off.

For pump, I use 2 Eheim 2000 which is rated at 265-528 gph which gives me 530-1056 gph (pump is adjustable). I like to use 2 pumps for redundancy in case one fails, I still have another one working. I currently use Eshopps wd-200cs. I plan to use the exact same setup for a 180 gallons I am currently setting up.

Also have a question - for the output line from tank -> wet/dry, sump --- which one is better -- flexible hose or pvc pipe ? In my current setup for 125 gallons, I use flexible hoses. But just wondering if using pvc pipes will be better ?

I think it depends on size. I went with pipe because I was running 2 inch drain lines. 2 inch hose at the local home improvement store was not real flexible. How much will you need to bend, how tight a radius, etc.

Bending and Radius ----- I have those 1" Flexible hoses that came with the Eshoops WD-200cs. So these hoses are real flexible. How much bending ? Not much at all. I connected the hoses to the DIY PVC plumbing I did from the bulkhead (2 1" output drain) and it is like a 'S', more straight than curve. But my main concern is that the the clearance between where these hoses are connected from the bulkhead area to the inlet of the wet dry sump is only a foot at the most. So there is a portion of the hose that actually goes up and down again. It goes up oh about 6". Will this be a problem ?

To the OP, I did not mean to hijack your thread, but thought that this topic will also help you.

Can you T flex piping or can you only do that with pvc?

i would prefer using a single pump. any recommendations for a single pump?

Also does everyone use a pipe 3/4 the way up in the drain line? should i do it for both my drains the same pvc height?

not a problem on the thread hijack, we are all learning.
