Anyone who goes through threads i this forum probably more then twice came across one of my threads about a sump for a 72 gallon bow front tank. I'm thinking between a 20 gallon standard size tank or a 29 gallon tank. If I wan't to keep the 12 1/2 inch width I can't go no more then 31 inches so I can only play with height now. I would think a 17 inch tall sump is better then a 13 inch, but I will have to see based on protein skimmer.

I've been told and been hearing AquaC Skimmers are great models...they have a bunch of models! Don't know which exactly would fit in or at least hang on the sump because I plan to have a refugium in here to. Cliff is currently on vacation for the holidays which is great...cause everyone needs to get out of the house over the holidays....wish I was in florida....

www.glasscages.com provide excellent customer service, and I'm think of having them custom make a sump for me. I would like to have a basic lay-out of exactly the glassing should be placed....before Cliff went, we were taken about what tanks would fit in the stand.

I'll shorten this to look very concise...cause I don't know how to write organize.

Anyone have ideas of a layout for a 29 gallon sump? (Glassing locations and how far apart, etc)

Any specific AquaC Skimmer for this tank, I'm not afraid to purchase one rated for 100+ gallons of water...?

Any pumps recommended to use? (Maxijet brands and riots I think I saw)

I don't know what should the Overflow box flow rate of this size tank should be...this will help greatly!

Any other things I should get for a sump...as u can see I'm nervous because the show of glasscages company is upcoming the end of January and they want the order in like a week!

Thanks A Million Guys...I would like to delete the other threads...don't know how.

Mods have to delete other threads.

I know little about sumping, because right now I am in the process of designing my first PERSONAL sump as well. (I have helped others build theirs)

Maxijet I dont think makes big enough pumps for use in sumps, I could be wrong.

You might want to use the urchin skimmer, this you could set in the bottom of your sump, while running your skimmer outside of it. Skimmer choice is really up to you though.

As far as tank size goes, I would choose whatever gives you the most h2o volume, and the most room for error as far as what happens when your return pump stops.

Hope this helps

If you do an Aqua C Remora skimmer I would recommend keeping it on the back of the tank and not in the sump to get the thinnest layer of water off the top possible for optimal skimmer performance. This will also be needed because you can't keep the sump water level high enough to hang a skimmer on the side without the risk of the sump overflowing in a power outage/overflow break scenario.

If you choose a larger skimmer it should obviously go in the sump. Getting an oversized one may be the way to go here, though the Aqua C Remora Pro is as easy to use as it gets and it performs well. If you get an in sump, it will not be adding to the clutter of the tank, which a lot of people like.

Like Fleshy said, Skimmer choice is up to you.

As far as the sump goes, you will need to have the skimmer measurements if you are going to put it in the sump. Also account for heaters and the return pump. If you are not doing a refuge then the setup will be pretty simple for your sump.

I think a CPR CS90 or CS100 or equivalent would do the trick for an overflow box.
A MagDrive 7 or 9.5 depending on head height. As you can see in this link

http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem.aspx?category=Danner_Mag_Drive_Supreme_9.5_950_GPH_Water_Pump_500_to_1000_Gallons_Per_Hour_Submersible_Water_Pumps&vendor=Danner_Mfg.&idProduct=DN1111&IdCategory=FIWPSBFT&child=DN1127&tab=1&size=9.5%20(950%20gph)

The higher the height the less the flow. So if you choose the CS90 overflow, then most likely you will want the Mag 7. If you choose the CS100 overflow, then the mag 9.5 will be better.

You just can't choose a return pump that is faster than the maximum flow of the overflow. The return pump would remove all the water from the sump then. The overflow will match the return pump as long as the return pump isn't too big.

I did not factor in any turns or runs(horizontal piping) that will slow the return pump. So most likely you could do the Mag 9.5 no matter what.

Layout wise, you want the raw water from your tank to flow to the skimmer first. So the first baffle will be slightly lower than the outlet of your skimmer. If it is higher, it will flow into the skimmer and prevent it from working. The next baffle should be 1 inch from the first, but starting 1 inch from the bottom and rising higher than the first baffle. The third baffle should be the same as the first baffle and 1 inch from the second baffle.

If you want you could put 2 inches between the baffles and that is where you could put chemical filtration like carbon bags. You would just have to construct something in there to hold them.

I also put filter pads for mechanical filtration of larger particles in between the baffles. You MUST make sure you clean these frequently and replace them at least every few months. Otherwise, they will become nitrate factories just like anything else. I clean my filter pads about twice a week to give you an idea of how often.

On the other side of the baffles would be your return pump and heater(s).

You must test this too make sure there is not too much water on the return pump side. In a power outage, when the power turns back on, the pump will start and the siphon in most overflows will not so the pump would pump all the water in that side of the sump into the main tank.

If you have this problem you can just make the skimmer side of the baffles larger and the return pump side smaller.

Think something like this for the sump:

water from tank water to tank

I I heater I
I skimmer I I I pump I
I___________I I____________I

This is a very crappy drawing :) but should give you the idea. The I's are baffles and the sides of the sump.

Honestly, with how simple this project is, I wouldn't pay someone to do it. You can buy silicone(no mildew stopper, just 100% silicone) and have the glass pieces cut. Then put it together and let sit a few days. It is quite easy.

I know how easy it would be to make it easy from what everyone tells me....I'll see. Also a lot of places use acrylic sumps which makes $$$$ go up...I understand acrylic tanks but sumps too...is it worth the extra $$$$?

Also my aunt is getting a larger fish tank without her husband knowing lol...she had a 50 gallon and is now upgrading to a 75 gallon corner tank. She purchased it from glasscages and also got the 20 gallon sump they make. I was looking at their pre-made sumps, but they look different from what you guys make on mfk.

If you guys don't mind I'll post a list of everything I think should be in the sumps....stuff like skimmer, heater and most of all I really want to make a compartments for plants and rocks.

I'll be back on at like 1am cause I gotta go to work now.

Ok this is what I think:
-Aqua C Urchin Pro In Sump Skimmer with Mag Dive 3...don't know if Rio is better.
-300 watt heater
-Ok re reading your post nonstop.....ok should I go with Cs90 over flow with mag 7 or the Cs 100 with 9.5.....also what do you mean "head height"?
-Don't know what size pump I should get for last compartments, where as the water returns back to the tank. Mag 5,6,7,8,9...

Also does this look like a reasonable sump?

Thanks A lot....I think Cliff is on vacation still.....if not he'll chime in soon lol....I hope
Don't know what else...I've seen sumps with a rectangle foam sponge somewhere...filter socks.

Any other info I need...or media?

The tank will eighter be a 20 gallon long or 29 gallon tall....
