My uncovered sump has been getting around a 1/5-1/3 inch of evaporation per day so I decided to just put a filter cloth over it. I thought it would slow the evaporation down and keep the sump insulated. To my suprise the evaporation rate has increased and I'm losing up to 1 inch a day. Why does it evaporate more with a cloth covering it?

is the cloth getting any "splashing" on it

also its "winter time"... humidity goes down so evaporation goes up...

I wouldn't used cloth covers for the sump since they absorb the water rather than block it. That's why you see all the water on glass tops to tanks.

Use something else to prevent evaporation or just add water each day. Or turn your heat down.
