I have always heard that you use a wet/dry for primarily bio filtration. When I built mine I designed it to do all three in one. Is there any definite need to have an extra canister filter for mech? My return pump was too big for my overflows, so I t'd the return line and put the extra pressure through a Mag 350 (pulled the impeller) with the micron filter. I also have two separate chambers in the sump that the water can't bypass that is running a coarse Poret foam, then a finer Poret foam. The water looks good in the tank, but I was just wondering if there is a need for more mech. The whole point of the sump was to get more bio and get all the hoses and cords and heaters out of the main tank. Thoughts?

Get a filter sock.

I do. I forgot to put that in my original post, but the overflows run through two 200 micron filter socks before getting to the Pond Matrix. I mean overall the water looks much better than before when I was running three canisters on it, but I'm just nervous since it looks good and seems to be working. I'm a half full kind of guy, if things are working right I start to worry. haha....

I kept my Eheim on the sump to make sure the bio was up and running for about 4 weeks. Just took it off this weekend (using it on another tank now). It all seems to be good and the parameters never changed (I don't think I went thru a mini-cycle) when I added the sump and pulled two of the canisters. I still have my UGF running on it. I need to start another thread about how and when to pull it.
