when you run a sump is just the overflow enought or do you run a canister or hob for more mechanical filtration

If your water flow is good enough that it keeps particles suspended until the overflow gets them a sump is plenty. Really, it doesn't matter as far as biologically healthy water goes, but if you want better mechanical filtration increasing flow helps. The best way to do that is with a wide flow powerhead like a Korallia or a Tunze.

Yeah a sump will likely be enough. And if you want two less tubes coming in and out of your tank, I'd skip the canister. But if you aren't worried about that, a canister would be a great addition especially for additional mechanical filtration.

They pretty much said it all...

They aren't required for healthy water... but if you want to make cleaning easier powerheads are great for keeping debris off the substrate... canisters are also an option but clutter up the tank a bit, plus keep in mind you want the additional flow at the bottom of the tank, not the top.

David... you have one of the best sig quotes I've ever seen - Be the person your dog THINKS you are.

ok would a sump be rediculous on a 75 and if no how big should ity be , and i have a koryla num.2 powerhead where should i point it to use it with my caniter filters

Wouldn't be ridiculous...I've heard of sumps on 15 gallon salt tanks. Although it would probably be a bit of a hassle unless the 75 is drilled and plumbed for a sump. I'm personally not a fan of the over flow boxes and U-tubes, etc you have to keep up and going in the event you don't have a drilled/cornerflo type setup from the beginning. On a 75, you could put a 30 gallon tank in as a sump and be fine though.

You can experiment with the powerhead. If you only have the one, I'd probably put it in the opposite front corner from your filter intake.

Thanks nutcase, I think it says a lot.

Haha

lol, and thanks a lot David... I told my girl what your quote said... not to direct it at her but just to share an interesting thought... now she won't talk to me...

You can put a sump on any sized tank. I know two Salt-Heads that have sumps an nono tanks (one is an 8 gal, the toher a 12)... I also know Discus breeders who have sumps on 29 gals... I have several 10 gal fry tanks hooked up to a sump...

Basically if you want to make tank maintenance a lot more forgiving, use a sump...

I personally do not like any of the HOB style overflow boxes I've looked into. But I would imagine with their limited flow capacity they would be more suitable for smaller thanks than monster tanks...
