Hi guys,

I know this is an easy question to answer and i have seen it before, but i can't find it again.

I am just wondering when setting up a Aquarium Sump, do i use fine filter media first like Eheim Substrat Pro. first then Bio Balls

or should i be using

bio balls ontop of the Subtrat Pro?

My idea will be something along the lines of

Filter wool
Sponge
Bio Balls
Substrat Pro
Then another sponge

Let me knwo what you guys think
its probably a 2 ft sump for a 150 gallon tank

i just bought 4 litres of Substrat Pro.

Regards,

David

IF this is a wet/dry filter, you don't need anything other than floss (first) and bioballs. The SubPro is best for submerged applications.

Please post a photo of a filter you're trying to emulate, and I can give you more detailed advice. The term "sump filter" means different things to different people.

im just wondering is it better to have the Fine media at the top (Substrat) or the bio balls at the top?

I can't see how the water enters the top. If it comes into the sump from the very top, you should lower the water level in the sump by half, and fill the left side with bioballs only with the exception of a floss prefilter on top. The bioballs do not work well fully submerged. Water should just splash and trickle over them.

And go with a pre-filter on top of the drip plate as cchhcc suggested.

Hi guys,

This tank has a wier overflow on my 5x2x2, i am thinking of taking out some of the bio balls from the filter, and put this in the wier. (i will include a picture tonight)
Btw i did not design the filter, was thinking of this lay out when i receive the Substrat

from bottom to top

Black Filter Sponge
4L of Ehiem Substrat pro
Black filter sponge
Bio Balls
White filter cotton.

let me know what you guys think
