Right now, I'm in the planning stages of setting up my 120. I've never done a tank with a sump before, but I think it would be the best way to keep the budget down on this tank. I have a couple 29 gallons that were used to grow out fry and turtles and they are in pretty bad shape as far as looks, so would a 29 gallon make a decent sized sump for a 120 I should I look into a bigger plastic tub or something? Also, when I built the tank, what seems like forever ago, I never planned on a sump for it, so nothing is drilled. I've been going back and forth about whether I should just drill it now before setting it up (it's plywood on the back and sides, so it shouldn't be that hard to do) or go with so overflows that don't require drilling. I've already seen them in threads so I'll look around, but if anyone would like to post any ideas here, that would be awesome.

I think a 29 would work fine for a 120 gallon tank. Of course, the bigger, the better, but all you really need to do is insure that if the power shuts off, the sump can hold enough water to keep the sump from overflowing. Are you going to put a trickle filter in it?

Also, what would you guys recommend for a return pump?

I'm not sure about the design of the sump at this point, I'll be looking into that as well.

?

Anyone have a favorite brand or anything for the return pump?

Check out the spec's of the water pumps you are looking at --- watts vs gph there is a big difference from brand to brand with the same out put. 5 or 10 watts an hour over 5 or so years can add up quick $$$$$$

well i just made a sump myself out of a 33gal i got for free, heres the thread with a few pics in there somewhere, http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173496

that was in the testing stages i just took a few more pics of my tank today with the sump running heres some pics of that too

as for pumps i like my magdrive, got it at bigals, and the thing is damn close to silent.

i got most of my info and design help from the DIY forums here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=30 and just made things to my liking, keep in mind this sump i made is a wet sump not a wet/dry.
hope this helps a bit
