Sump for 72G tank???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are positives and negatives to sumps. Honestly, if you tank is doing well with canisters and HOBs, then there is really no benefit. A sump is just another type of filtration.

Sumps are only required if the tank is

- Large freshwater tank (cost efficient)
- Saltwater tanks (Canister = Nitrate factories)

I would go with an FX5 instead of those complicated plumbings and drillings

Sumps are never required. They are just an alternate form of filtration. Either you use one or you don't.

An FX5 is probably a bit much for a 72G tank. But I do agree, you would be better off just getting a canister for that tank.

Sumps are for any size tank. It doesn't matter. IMO they're easier to maintain than cracking open a canister... Just me.

i feel sumps more efficient may be because of its capacity to hold more media or more rooms for different types of media and also a large surface area which helps in the growth of beneficial bacteria well canisters also does the same but still i favor the sump filtration more.. just my experience

right now im using a magnum 350 canister, I wasnt sure if the sump would help harvest more BB or do nothing for me at all.

If anything, slap a cheap HOB on the back of there and call it good.
