Starting the design phase of building the sump for my 580 gallon tank . I am using my 125g tank for my sump. See crude drawing. Obviously not to scale, and the pumps will be sitting next to each other front to back rather than left to right, so that section of the sump is smaller than shown on drawing. I just wanted to show the 2 pumps. The compartment with the bio media will be about 4' long.

Thoughts? Advice?

Suggest more than one heater. Other than that looks good so far.

I'm curious as to the reason for exhausting the UV unit back into the sump rather than into the tank. I've never used one of these and don't know much about them. Is this how it is typically plumbed? What is the rationale?

Just some food for thought. I prefer the water to overflow over a baffle into the socks, then under a baffle then over a baffle into my bio chamber. The reason being it's a lot easier to maintain them, that way your not putting them under water to change them dumping the waist right back into the sump.

I dont want to add another bulkhead and plumbing in the wall of the tank. The reason I scavenged some flow off 1 of the return pumps is that the sterilizer calls for 300gph and I can get that by regulating the flow with a valve.

Love the UV idea that way, a lot easy to regulate flow with the valve that way. Great thought!

This UV setup works because it is a smaller loop. The idea in smaller loops is the pathogen gets hit more often for slower flow rate.
Just have to make sure the UV is full of water. Efficiency is lost if it is not. Should be plumbed to ensure UV chamber is always full when pump goes out or damage from the hot lamp may occur.
