I'm trading tanks with a person off craigslist. His tank is a 140 gallon tank with a corner overflow.
The thing is I HAVE NO IDEA how to use overflows, let alone how sumps operate. I really want to
use this tank as a show tank, but dislike all of the wires/tubes hanging everywhere. Please throw
your knowledge on me!

Questions:
- What size sump should I use on the 140 gallon and its cost?
- How do the return pipes and everything work? (overflow)
- Pros and Cons?

You will be fine with about a 30-40 gallon tank, larger if you want. Water is pumped into the upper tank from the lower tank as the water overflows from the upper it.will fill the lower to be pumped back up to the dispatch tank. Key is to not have so much water in they system so that the sump is super full, you only.want it about half full so.that when the power shuts off you have room for the water in the pipes to fill into the
Sump and not over flow it. You will be fine with everything just will be a little learning curve. Look up filter socks they are a great mechanical filtration unit. Also start researching about durso stand pipes. Does his system come with a pump already? All the fittings (bulk heads, piping) I'm glad to help, just do some reading on everything and then pm me some questions you have.

Pros: They're awesome, cleaner looking, and more efficient than most other filtration options for large tanks, will hide all of the wires/tubes etc you're concerned about if set up right.
Cons: They require a bit of research and understanding to get the most out of them. There's plenty of threads and info on here about them, have a look at how JCardona1 or Aldiaz23 have their sumps set up if you want a simple-yet-effective option. There isn't really a right or wrong way and a lot of the design really depends on your fish and set up, take some time to search these forums and you'll be overflowing with good ideas soon enough!

Thank you for replying. His does not include a sump. I plan on making/buying one. I guess I have to research on how the mechanisms work before doing so.
