HI im new to MFK and i have a spare 10 gallon tank i want to make into a sump. I was thinking about useing my canister filter as a pump to pump out the water from the 10 gallon into my 55 tank. than have a siphan from the 55 tank to the sump with some kind of float valve and some pvc to put it all together. I was also going to silicone some glass pieces in it so i can have a bubble trap for my protien skimmer and put my heater in there also and have a section for some live sand and rock maybe with some crabs or soemthing. Where the siphane would be at the top of the 55 tank i was all so going to fabracate some kind of overflow thing. the pvc pipes i was going to make would also have some shut off valve kind of things.. what do you guys think of this kind of set up safe? reliable? I was also going to use 3/4 tubing... smaller bigger? ty for input.

55 gallon tank, 4 bags of live sand(60-80Lbs?), 25Lbs Live rock,130wat coral life lights with 10,000k lights bulbs and the reg. white one, Magnum 350 canister filter(active carbon, bio rings and foam),Seaclone Protein skimmer(for 100gallon),550 powerhead.
Live stock
FoxFace Rabit fish(venomous)
Pecula Clown
Blue Damsel
CLean up crew
4 red legs hermit crabs
2 blue leg hermit crabs
Coral
Polps? on some of my live rock

the two main problems I see are:

The tank is too small, if the power fails it'll probably over flow.
A canister can't be used as a return pump. It relies on gravity to help move the water. They don't "lift" water very well.

Same thoughts here... your canister will not have enough power to operate your sump. I would setup two different systems, run your canister and then pickup a submersible pump to power the sump (like here -----> http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9849 ). The ten gallon is probably a little small for a sump as well. Pick up a used 20 gallon or a rubbermaid tote.

I have a 60 gallon tank with a 20 gallon DIY sump and a HOB filter. Plenty of filtration for me, but I'm running freshwater.

I was actrully thinking about that going bigger In the tank size. thank you for the link too! now would that first model sump pump be strong enought for 55 gallon tank as far as flow gose? are technically would i need one for a 75 gallon tank? for filtration??? ty for these quick replys!!!

for a 55 gallon id do at least a 25-30 gallon sump if you want a refugium. A mag 9. 5 will be fine for that size tank but id run a 1200. Id also either purchase a HOB overflow box, or find some instructions telling you how to make it exactly to par. The thing with them is they can lose siphone if not made properly and your pump will continue to push water into the tank. If the power goes out, you also want it to be able to create a siphone again on its own. Its tricky lol.

I would really need close to a 1000 gallons per hour??? i dont think my canister filter cleans out the much... it says its good for 100 gallons im... if i run a sump should i even use my canister filter or should i just make the refugium in like a 25-30 gallon tank with the bio matterial i have and add some more slowly? also how loud is this sump going to be with this pump huge *** pump lol? Half the reason I was debating on doing this was because i wanted less nioce because its in my room and i wanted to cut down on the bubbles and get rid of the heater and stfuff thats on the back of my tank. thanks you guys a are a great help.

i am in the same boat here, but i have a 90 gal, i was looking into the hob style over flow boxs, i read some where as far as gph you want like ten times the tank size and after you calculate your head loss and fittings and what not.

the mag 12 is 1200gph, more then plenty for a 55. You will get extra flow through power heads. You dont want a lot of GPH going through the sump with the fuge because you decrease contact time with macro algae, increase the amount of micro bubbles and you increase your risk of massive overflow on such a small sump. 30 gallon sump shouldnt have very much GPH otherwise all your doing is moving water, not filtering anything or letting the fuge's macro algae do waht they need to do. My 40 breeder sump has a mag 18 on it, this is on a 120 gallon tank. I have multiple power heads to make up for any lost flow.
