I have an overflow box setup with two hoses running down to the sump. The sump is a 29 gallon tank. I have a (drilled on bottom) 5 gallon bucket that sits on the top of the 29 gallon and drips into the tank. The 5 gallon bucket is full of bio balls. Could I have both hoses run into the 5 gallon bucket, and put filter socks full of botton on the end of the hoses for mechanical filtration? I was also thinking of putting carbon in the sump itself to help with any odors that may arise. I was told the pump does about 900gph. Would this work? I am gonna draw a pic so you guys can better understand. (visual learner here)

IMHO, wouldnt it be better to have the socks first, then the bio balls, then the sump? that way debris will not get caught in the bioballs and create nitrates etc. i think that would be your best bet.

Cotton clogs quickly. I'd say don't put anything in your filter socks, but just make sure to once a day, or every two days, depending on the amount of gunk, to clean the socks. I learned from Laticauda that you have to smash them hard against something, and she was right. I grabbed some of my media, which I normally just squeeze out, went outside and smashed it against a brick wall, and a bunch of gunk came out.

Or you could also put a mat of media on top of the bioballs.

You won't have any odor issues if your water is kept clean. The thing that produces the "fishy" odor is a chemical that is not present in a tank that's cycled and nitrAtes kept low.

Don't fill your socks with anything, it will impede the flow of your water. A drip tray with a thin layer of filter floss (sold in square/rectangular sections) cut to fit in the tray will do a good job with mechanical filtration.

Some food does stink though. If you feed your cute little new bichirs some massivore, you'll see what I mean! ;)
