Here's my simply design for a 10gal sump on my 30 gal planted tank. Its basic, let me know what you think and what you would add.

simple but effective

Thats mainly what I was going for. This is my first sump build so I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and effective.

Thanks for the input.

Not sure about the design. Will the media be fully submerged, with water flowing up through the media? If so, that's no good for bio balls or scrubbies. They should be exposed to air with water dripping over them for max surface area for bacteria growth. That design could work with ceramic media, which works fully submerged.

Also, how will the media be secured? I'd put it on an elevate platform, like eggcrate, so it's not just sitting on the bottom, and the water can freely move underneath it, and up.

I will probably end up using ceramic rings. I'm at work so i hastily put a design together. I plan on adding plastic petboard under and above it to secure the media.

Gotcha. Yeah ceramic media would be the best choice for an upflow design. If you use bioballs or scrubbies, you'll want the media exposed, and will need a separate divider along with a drip tray.

Take a look at the links in my sig. You can see the sumps I've built in those three tanks. All are extremely easy to make. All you need is an empty glass tank :)
