I was just wondering what kind of sump maintenance you guys do if anything. Ever since I setup my sump I really haven't touched any of the filter media. Should I occasionally take out the filter sponges and rinse them out or would that just be getting rid of positive bacteria? Is it just a set it up and leave it sort of thing other than main tank water changes or is there some maintenance that I have been neglecting? Thanks.

Best answer depends on stock of ur worried about loosing the bb in you sound rinse it in aquarium water but realisiticly ur spoung is probley mech only if ur running a heavy bio load in which case I wouldn't worry about the spoung I'd clean it always.irun run filter socks changed every day I don't do anything else :)

I set up my first big sump on a "big" (to me) tank in November. I have changed the mechanical media every week or two since set up but I haven't rinsed the bio yet.

Normally I just do it by eye. If the media looks visually dirty then I rinse it.

I like to keeep alot of bio media in my tanks so I can just take a portion out and blast it with a hose and not worry about crashing the tank
