I finally decided to put together a 40 gal sump for my 100 gallon tank. What is the best media to put inside the sump, I'm pretty new to this so all I know is you need bio balls and sponges lol. Please give me some advice.

bio ring, bio house, bio home*, gravel, plant, carbon (don't put carbon if you have arowana), and those american style cleaning thingy that they dump in (i said it for the fact we don't do that in canada :D)

*bio home is different then bio house

O alright thanks a lot, why don't you put carbon with aros? I have carbon in my aquaclear 110's that are currently on there with 5 blue aros in the tank.

it kills the color of the aro, and aros act strange once carbon is introduced, hard to explain, but defeinately affect the quanlity of the fish, some say they get holes (not big holes of course) on the asian aro, but not sure with south american aros though, maybe they are fine with carbon

You just need a first stage of mechanical filtration. I use filter socks. 2nd stage is biological. Scrubbies are the best as they are cheap and contain more surface area then bio balls. And they if you want, a thrid mechanical filter such as a sponge. Keep it simple.

ah ha! scrubbies is what they called (bad english, don't know alot words lol) i'm gonna get some of those

and you're right about keeping simple, too much filtration will affect the flow rate, which leads to bad filtration :nilly:

forsure wheres the cheapest place to get all these. I already picked up on some filter socks just need the others. Thanks for all the advice!

i'm gonna be checking the dollar store for scrubbies, don't know where else. and others buy from someone else, where as LFS ain't cheap.
