I'm setting up (MY FIRST) 20gal sump for my 110 gal, currently. the sump will be entirely DIY, but I need a physics lesson real quick. From what I gather, my siphon intake for the sump will be brought on by gravity and should match the speed of my output pump, which will be a 384gph pump. Is there anything I am missing about this process? Do I need to place the intake siphon tube anywhere specific in the depth of the tank? Thanks everybody!

*usually* you just use the siphon to surface skim. I like this best because it takes away any oily stuff that can settle on the top of the water.
If you are designing it very basically, you want the maximum rate your siphon can handle to be greater then the max rate of the pump. That way the speed of the siphon is dependent only on the speed of the water being pumped back in.
Just look up the table in the sticky and pick the pipe diameter accordingly.

Good luck

its gonna be a pretty basic setup. filter sock over intake, 2 sections of baffling, a bacteria sanctuary in the middle section with an HOB, and then the return. as for pipe diameter, i looked through the filtration stickies and didnt see anything on sizing pipe diameters.. could my siphon ever be TOO big? i figure i could just get a 2" diameter U-shape transparent plastic pipe as my siphon and that could suck down anything that my 384 could muster

alright!! thanks a lot!
