Somewhere you cant find me....
In a little while my tank will be built and I can pick it up. It is: 1290L or in your guys terms: 341 US Gallons. It is 215 long x 75 wide x 80 high in cm and
84x29.5x31.5 inches and 7x2.4x2.6 feet. I was wondering wether I should use a sump or two Fluval Fx5s? Do you guys know what these are? We have them in NZ so I assume you do. I would like a sump because it gives a big filtering capacity and you can chuck all the heaters and stuff in it. BUT. This tank is going in my bedroom and I want to know if sumps are noisy at all? Does anyone else have them while they sleep?? I also want to know what is the best form of overflow? 2 corners or just 1? Or are there any other ways?:nilly: Also, with an overflow, does it mean that stuff settles on the bottom and doesnt get filtered. BTW i dont want undergravel jets.

Thanks very much

Sump
If its designed well with a durso type standpipe and a good pump it should be quiet

For a tank that big, I'd run a big wet/dry sump, and back it up with an FX5 or 4 AC110s for mech filtration setup.

This tank is a respectable size, but it is not HUGE. Go with the two FX5s. However, bear in mind that the FX5s will be heavy when filled with water and you will have to figure out a system for draining them prior to cleaning.

Why not go with a sump and a canister? Then you get the best of both worlds.

:iagree:Thats what I was going to say! I have 150gl tank and I have a sump, RenaX4 (canister) and an internal filter (powerhead, for water current/small filter). Being that I do 40% H2o changes every 4 days, my fish seem very happy and show their colors all DAY. That gives me good reason to believe
1. my tank is a good size (for now)
2. the water is good (so that tells me that I do have enough filters, plus you can never have to many filters IMOP)
3. because my water chemistry is constant, I am feeding correctly.

So I say Do both aswell

Sumps can be quiet if built correctly, so a big sump (with 2 pumps for redundancy) is all you need to keep it efficient, quiet, and reliable.

i totally agree with gomez--go with a sump and make a durso standpipe in the overflow.. i have a 180 built like that and its not loud at all... i also have a fx5 on that tank too..

I have a tank that is drilled for the sump "because i know it will always restart after being turned off " and a powerhead with sponge filter that sits on the bottom and the output faces upwardes with a tube going to the surface helps keep the bottom clean and helps with circulation.
