Sump or canister?

Sump, if set up right much easier to use and maintain. I have both, including FX5's and I like the sumps much better.

i have both right now and seriously the fx5 is a pain in the berhind, i cant keep it filled with water, i'll fill it with an external pump and when i turn that off and run the fx5's pump it eventually just empties itself and starts to run dry. so right now it's just piggy backing off my cascade 500

i would go with sump.

I'd choose a sump everytime

Well Im gonna have to say I run both and they both can be used for specific functions. I run a sump for biological filtration and oxygenation, but then I also like canister filters for water polishing and carbon. My sump is an overflow design so it pulls water from the top, and the canister can pull from lower down near the substrate and pull particulate from the water.

I will say sumps give a lot more room and can do just about all kinds of filtration, so if forced to choose, I would say sump.
