will this sump plan work on a 35 gallon reef tank?

All the small powerhead will do is circulate the water in the refugium. It won't add to the flow unless you direct its output through the pipe into the skimmer section.

The good thing about sumps and refugiums is that if you use basic concepts, which you have, just about any configuration works.

Just make sure that your pipe from the refugium to the skimmer section doesn't get clogged, otherwise you'll have problems and likely a burned up pump.

Few things you need to consider here....

1. The skimmer should be the first chamber to make sure it gets raw water. This will make it work the best.
2. Make sure you have bulkheads big enough to more than handle the water the overflow and return pump are moving. I believe that 1 1/2's should be big enough for whatever pump you use, but make sure.
3. Why not do all of this in a single tank instead of 2 with bulkheads?
4. The powerhead is a good idea in the refugium.
5. The biggest problem with using bulkheads like this is that you want the water level in the refugium to be as high as possible to add to the total water volume and you can do that with this setup.

Thats a legit way to do it for sure. I really like it a lot Cliff on both the drawing and the setup.

Definitely. Simple and good way to set it up.

Good stuff. That should work fine. Rule of thumb is no more then two inches between the baffles on the weir plate, and a two inch space between the center plate and bottom of the tank.

And no less than an inch....but good luck getting them sealed in there any closer than that anyway.

I would keep LR out of my sump.

Cliff has a good idea putting a powerhead in there, but the fact is that somewhere in your tank, nitrates have to get trapped.

Rock will trap crap, and it will not be very much fun to clean out.

I guess rock is better than putting sand in your sump.

There are a couple other things I would change, but it looks as if they guys have steered you in the right direction.
