After going through many sump threads on here this is what i have come up with for a 29gallon long sump for a 75gallon tank.....I'd just like some feedback as I plan on getting the glass today or tomorrow so I can get rolling on this. The picture is not drawn to scale but I'm pretty sure the glass will be, from left to right...4" tall, 10" tall seated 1.5" above bottom, and 11.5" tall. As for the size of the divisions, where the water is brought in I think that will be 4" where the media is will be 20", to the left of the media will be 2" and where the pump is will be 10"..This is for a FW tank with a pretty big bio load..if I left out anything let me know and I will try to fill you in, haha. If it's of any importance the size of the aquarium is 36"x12"x16"

I did the space between the pump and the bio area 3" so that I would be able to put a sponge in to catch any debris that may have made it's way through. Might want to consider that. Also, you are going to want the glass panel on the left to be a little higher than the glass panel on the right. This way water doesn't go straight across and skip your bio area and go straight to your return pump.

You could also do a smaller area where the pump is, just turn it sideways. You shouldn't need ten inches over there. This will give you a little more room for media.

sounds good, didn't think about the water going straight over but that is an easy fix, as is the 10" room for the pump..I do not know what pump I am getting yet but I'm sure I can find one that will fit in a smaller space....With the glass I think I read on here somewhere that 6mm Float Glass would be a good choice to use and easy to use for this situation..Is that what I should look for or just talk to my glass supplier and see what they recommend for aquarium use?

I just purchased 1/4" glass and had the edges rounded so they would fit onto the silicon at the bottom of the tank a little better. Be sure to use 100% silicone to put the panels in, believe mine was clear door and window silicone from Lowes. Don't use tub and tile silione or anything like that. Also get the pieces cut about 1/16" shorter than you need so you can fit them into place a little easier. I had mine cut the exact width of the tank which resulted in me having slightly crooked panels. :(

Look into getting some sock holders for the first chamber (one for each pipe from your tank). Size that chamber according to the sock holders.

Did you check out my "fancy" sock holders?

No, I hadn't seen them before. Do you have a thread for them? Or other pics? I'm intrigued.

From what I was able to search and read quickly about the socks is that they just help filter out the water correct? For that I guess I need to find out how many drains from my main tank I will have, and to deterimine that I first need to figure out what pump I will be using...It's a good thing I sit in front of a computer at work all day, haha

For the pump I think I may get Danner Mag 9.5 which should only be pushing around 750gph at 5ft...This shouldn't be over kill for a 75gallon should it? I assume I can always restrict flow if need be, better to have more than less.

Really? Will have to get that one then if it's working good for you, I guess a 6x turnover is still good but not too much. Now with the drain, from your sticky on pipe size and what not, will one 3/4" drain be enough? I plan on drilling the top of my tank as the bottom is tempered glass. Any recomendations on using braided hose instead of PVC other than price?
