so i have upgraded to a 150 gal tank and now have my old 30 gal empy. so i figure i want to make it into a sump, figure input on one side into bio balls with 3 baffles then refugium and small grow out in the middle to 3 more baffles then the output pump. so my questions are how many GPH pum should i get to run it and do I evenly match the overflow box GPH with the pump or go bigger? and does my design sound like it will work?

yeah you'd be better off with ceramic rings or scrubbies if it is going to be submerged.

I have a CPR overflow on my 240 and it works great. Figure out what overflow you want and find a pump to match it. I'm using the cs150 and have it matched with a mag18

Overflow always has to handle more than the pump. Doesnt matter how big you go on overflow as long as its bigger. I had a 30g sump with an eshopps 1200gph overflow and a mag 9.5 on a 150g. Worked very well with a moderately stocked tank

thanks for alll the replies, especially about changing to bio rings im going to go that route. and above quote going to look into that pump and overflow since its pretty much the same set up as mine.

another quick question my baffles any rule of thumb about how big the opening at the top and bottoms have to be, and how far apart from each other??
