It is sometimes erroneously stated that dirty media in a sump will be a factor in the rate of operation of a sump pump.

Where as the reality is that since a sump is an open system you only have two modes of flow:

1) At least as much water flows across the media to supply the pump at its rate of operation.
2) Insufficient water flows through the media and as a result the return compartment progressively pumps dry.

The simply fact is that if you restrict flow through the media of a sump you will not impact the operation of the pump right upto the point that the flow becomes lower than the pump rate, at which point the pump will begin to empty the return compartment until it fails.

Of course you'll be restricting the efficiency of the filter media but until you impede the flow to the degree as describe above you will not affect the rate of operation of the sump pump.

So, clogged media will not have any bearing on the pump rate for a sump pump excluding of course the fact that if it is sufficiently clogged the flow will quickly stop altogether.

There is therefore no reason to select a larger pump with a view to over coming restrictions in a sumps media as you will have quite the opposite effect and increase the chances of failure of the sump.

You're right... but most restriction due to buildup I've seen people talking about is WRT canister filters.

Also, most properly designed sumps have media bypasses when they begin to back up, so the water just bypasses the filtration and proceeds to the pump, so it never actually starves.
