Hello all,

I have just built a 600 gallon plywood tank with a 55 gallon sump tank sitting above it. I picked up a general utility/sump pump from Princess auto and have been running it now for about 5 months, working well, in fact it puts out enough heat to keep the tank at 28 degrees without heaters [yes, I am concerned about what will happen in the summer]. My question is with regards to electricity usage, it seems fairly high and it was suggested to me to switch over to a laguna pump which will cost a lot less to operate.

The pump is a Water Ace R3S 1/3HP submersible pump at 33gal per minute at 4' [roughly 1800 gallons per hour].

Really at a loss here as to what I should do, I am going to try to get a friend over with his meter to see if it truly is the pump drawing that much energy but I am fairly certain it is. And to top it all off, I am going to have to find an inexpensive way to heat the water if I change the pump.

Would love to hear any suggestions you guys [and gals] have.

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking into buying one of the Laguna Max-Flos for my tank (or possibly two, for redundancy). They are very efficient pumps and from the research I have done, they seem to be pretty reliable. To get your 1,800 GPH at 4' head, you could use the 2400 which only draws 100 watts. I'll bet that your sump pump is drawing over 300 watts and that's why your electric bill is high.

Is the tank in an unheated area? Heating that much water can get expensive...that's why I'm keeping goldfish right now in my 770G.
