I'm sure this is a noob question for which there is an easy answer, but is there any reason why a standard submersible sump pump (like the kind sold in the plumbing section of Lowes) could not be used instead of a powerhead specifically designed for aquaria?

It seems like the standard plumber's sump pumps are much cheaper than the aquarium pumps like Mag Drive and QuietOne. For example, a 2000+ gph sump pump can be purchased for less than $100, whereas an equally powerful aquarium pump costs twice as much. My best guess is that a standard sump pump is probably too noisy.

It wont work. Actually it will for a little while then it will stop. These sump pumps NOT made for 24 hour use, so if they are used for too much time their motor will blow out or it will break.

I have to back air up on this one...You can use them for transfur pumps and the like but they are NOT designed for continious operation. Some of the better ones might even run for a year or more before they fail...but they WILL eventually fail. Another thing you need to think about are the materials involved...a sump pump is designed to remove excess water and in most cases dosn't have to be certifyed to move potable water.

there is one on the markit that can run continuously, its made by clarke, ill dig out my catalogue and get the model number for you:)
