would it be possible to rig up a sump pump in order to filter water... i think if u put the pump int he tank, then have the hose attached to a 2 inch diameter, and 2 foot long piece of PVC with screen on the side and holes... that garbage would get caught in the PVC and water would shoot out or even if i didnt use holes... and i had a slit so the water... it would spray causing surface movement and O2 exchange... and then to clean just disconnect hook up a 2nd one and clean out the PVC with a house outside... also if i do this i figure i could put carbon in too and other bio filtration particles... so i'd get mechanical(the screen) and bio(carbon) at the same time!..... possible?.... and as a question how much do u think it'd be using?...

You probubly could..and it might even work but it's a lot easier and less complicated to just add a foam prefilter or a Hydro sponge filter to the powerheads intake. Plenty of mechanical...biological filtration and lots of serface movement for O2 exchange.

well the sump pump i think would turn the water faster... i think its rated at like 1000-2000 gallons per hour

yes it would...and you can still attach a hydro5 to the intake and do the same thing...

What size tank are we talking here?

Do you mean a real sump pump?

i mean like a real sump pump... u plug that sucker in when u got a flood in ur basement typa sump pump... and it'd be for a 55 so it would make a DISTINCT difference

I think you'd be lucky if algae could live with that turnover rate (20x-40x?) in a 55g. :grinno:

45 sec. to do a 70% W/C.

I use this on some larger stuff.

Also sump pumps aren't made to run 24/7/365, they die (except for the really expensive ones).

The fish will think theyre in a tsunami and the electric cost will be horrific but itll work for a while, most of those pumps arent meant for continuos duty

oh alright... if the power to run it is too much and they cant handle long time running... then forget it haha... it was a thought worth asking for :-P... thank you guys

I was totally lost I was thinking of sump return pumps....LOL
Your in the relm of pond filtration now but like doc J said they don't last very long on continuious duty....so downscale your plans rather than abandoning them.
