i have an extra 10g laying around and i was wondering if it was worth turning into a sump for my 55g. and if its worth it, how much am i looking to spend on pump and media?

I have a 55gal, wouldnt bother, you can get nice filters for those anyways.
Don't see why not. A couple of filter socks instead of regular media to make up for the small size. I don't think there would be much room for regular sponge media hence my filter sock suggestion.
