sump question

I purchased a corelife protein skimmer for my 110 gal.The skimmer wont hang on because of the lid.I am going to put it in a sump.My question is how do I set that up,I have the aquarium for underneath and the overflow box.Also,when using a skimmer do I need to run a seperate filter system
