I am buying a 70 gallon sump from another hobbist. I want to get a 2500 gph pump for it so It can move enough water for my tank. To make 2500 gph to work in a 70 gallon sump, how thick should the piping be so it will not over flow. 2"? any other suggestions?

2500gph is way too much for 70gall
go with 600 -1000gph
i will be building w/d for my 55 gall with 500gph

as rule i use
canister filter 10xtank size, in my case 10x55gall=550 gph pump
sump 5-7xtank size 55x5(7)=275(385)gph pump

well i was told if you have larger piping you can get away with this, you dont agree at all?

I have a 1800 gph MD pump hooked up to my 55 gallon sump with no problems.

You want the bigger pipe coming out of the tank. The 3/4" line he is speaking of is for the pump going to the tank.

Let me also clarify. Are you getting a 70G sump or sump for a 70G tank?

Youare going to want big lines coming from the tank. More room for gravity to take effect. Smaller lines going to the tank because there will be presure behind it.
