Why do people drill holes in the sides I don't get it. WOuldn't it be just as easy to let it come in from the top?

I may have more questions about sumps to follow.

Thanks a ton!

some people do it to have another sump or fuge flow into there sump and into the out take pump back up to the display tank.

i drilled my sump on the side to allow my external skimmer to drain level instead of up and over, allowing me more GPH and a better foam head, as well as more air : water ratio control.

sometimes this also helps with noise and micro bubbles. As most sumps are built with "baffles" that make the water go up, under, and up again giving the bubbles time to burst, other sumps are created with less baffles to provide more room for a fuge or larger equiptment, etc....

another question about sumps-- I have a 29 gallon that I plan on using as a sump-- Does it matter what size tank I get? I'm thinking of getting a 90. It will work with that right? I just need different pumps compared to other tank sizes?

i think you will be okay with a 29 : 90. If its possible you might consider going larger on the sump. You want to have plenty of room for the water that will overflow into the sump once all the pumps are off. if you have a your overflow drain higher then im used too, then you will probably be alright, but better safe then sorry. Only other option would be to get say a 75 gallon. Same size just not as tall. This would work well with your 29 for a sump.

My system is a 120 gallon with a 40 breeder sump. this works very very well, i can have the sump almost half full already and once the pumps are off, only add another 5 gallons of water, so im plenty safe.

agreed ^ just make sure you get the size sump you want and have the space for and test and retest for when power fails so that it don't overflow and make mark's for the minimal water level and maximum water level in the sump.
