I setup a 15 column tank about three months ago. I have about 20lbs of LR which is starting to get a nice cost of coraline. Stocking for now is a blue damsel and a 2" clownfish. Also has 15lbs of live sand. I'm going to make a basic sump out of a rubbermaid tote. Mainly to add water volume and more rock to make it easier to maintain a good balance. So if the sump was 20 gallons or so, and i added 25lbs more rock, a skimmer and a filter sock and of coarse a return pump it would be worth it right? I figure when I upgrade tank size I could build a legit sump out of a 29g or so. So what do you guys think?
Any thoughts or suggestions?

more water volume is better, but idk how worth it is to go to that trouble ona small tank. You could just build one out of the 29 and use it on the 15, then just transfer it to the bigger tank when you upgrade. It pretty easy to make one out a a tank.

My stand is only 18" wide x 18" deep inside. It's in my son's room and I want to make sure all the stock stays healthy. Plus I'm trying to cut cost, I'm upgrading to a 37g column as soon as I can find one.

honestly, I woulnt bother. Personally if I was in your shoes Id just wait till I upgraded. Seems like a waste of time to go to the trouble of making a sump for something that doesnt really need it, while knowing you will be ungrading sooner than later. just start planning and building for the bigger tank. just my .02.

I get where you are coming from, but I don't think it's pointless. I have no room for a skimmer so I will in the sump. The only thing I wouldn't transfer to the new tank/sump is the tub itself. Plus as I can't find that 37g column anywhere it might be a little while. I will end up keeping this tank for atleast a year or so I figure. Anyone else have any input?

Ya just wait till you find another tank. But if your bored and need something to do for fun go for it.
