In the 1st section of my 3 compartment sump i have coarse and finer sponges to aid mechanical filtering. Periodically i rinse my sponges out to remove the gunk. However, when i disturb them its inevitable that some gunk comes free. I don't particularly want this gunk to end up getting sucked into the 2nd section where all my bio media is. So i painstakingly try and remove as much gunk as i can that ends up remaining in the 1st section when i disturb my sponges.
Would it be a problem if i got rid of the sponges altogether and just had the flow of water from my tank going through a single fine gauze filter sock which i could spend literally 1 minute a day rinsing out? Or, are the gunky bacteria laden sponges instrumental in aiding my bio side to maintain my water quality? Am i likely to see a sharp rise or fall in any of my parameters if i remove them completely?

Why not both? Let the water go into the filter sock as the main mechanical filtration, and leave the sponges just before the water reaches the bio-media as a pre-filter used to capture dirt while you are cleaning the sock.
