ok i just picked up a 75 gallon tank and the gave me a sump with it. the sump is an old 55 gallon with an external overflow. my question is what size submersible pump should i get what gps?

Depends on your overflow and how much flow it can handle. Also depends on the type of fish you want to keep.

As mentioned already, you should determine what the external overflow can handle - in general I see that as being the "bottle neck" to flow. Also it also will depend of how you plan to plumb and head pressure. The previous owner may have had a pump that's 950gph on paper, but unlikely it was turning water at that exact rate.

Once you've confirmed the overflow question, how much turnover you want, you can look into DC pumps out there. I like it them because you have the flexibility of controlling flow with the controller.

+1 on the DC pumps. They don't waste electricity, are quiet, and adjustable. HOWEVER....I just had my Deepwater Aquatics DC pump ballast die on me. Thankfully, I have backups. But just be careful...get a backup pump if you can.
