Just out of interest as i am looking to build a sump for my big 7ft i was wondering if i could install one without having my tank drilled, i was wondering if i could install a pump in the aquarium like on an aquarium and pump it down into the sump instead of a wear or an overflow. And then it go through my filtration and be pumped backup.Aswell as this if it would be succesful would it be ok if the pump in the aquarium is 2300l/h and in the sump
many thanks
luke

if I’m understanding, there’s not a way to tune the two pumps equally. If the pump from the aquarium pumps more then the return the sump would eventually overflow. If the pump from the sump pumps more then the sump runs dry.
To do this it would have to be a sealed enclosure like a canister filter.
Am I just misunderstanding what you are trying to accomplish?

You can still do a sump without drilling the tank.
You just have to use a proper siphon overflow

NEVER PUMP BOTH WAYS, you pump one way only, and gravity fixes the rest. As mentioned, you could never sync two pumps up to perfection to give you equal flow each way, especially when one is pumping water up and the other pumping it down.

If you are planning on a sump the only true tried and tested method is a drilled tank, any other overflow method and you really really really have to trust your syphon.

Thank you everyone i just dont see how on my tank i would be able to put a siphone or hang on the back over flow as it has an almost rim over it but thank you so much for letting me know haha

Can you post a picture of the problem area?
The rim of the tank and how wide it is.

I’m sure with all the folks on MFK doing DIY tanks and overflows someone can help.

There’s a multitude of DIY overflow designs and videos on how to make most of them.

I’ve made several over the years because I can never seem to find a tank that isn’t tempered glass.

Just drill it. It’s really not hard at all.
