SO I'm designing my first diy sump, and there are bunches of threads about this but can't find answers to specific questions.

1. How do you guys make it so the water evenly disperses over pot scrubber bio media?
2. I also read that pot scrubbers shouldnt be on the bottom of the tank but have "egg crate" under it. why is that ? and for that matter what exactly is "egg crate"?

other sump info if its relevant to answer these questions 55gal sump on 180gal tank 1200 gal overflow with mag 12 pump with 4.5ft head height.

Thanks.

Egg crate can be found at lows or home depot and is a white plastic grat used mainly for lighting. Look in the industrial light area. It works to keep the scrubbies off the bottom so detritus can fall through and be removed. Also place your heaters under the egg crate in the sump to clean up your tank.

To make water evenly disperse you will need a drip tray or spray bar. I prefer the first, a common one would be a plastic storage drawer with a lot of holes evenly drilled. I would even put gap mat or some type of mech filtration in the tray

any way of making a drip tray without the storage container? I've seen these and dont think they look very 'neat'?

you dont want scrubbies submerged because the beneficial bacteria need o2 and the best way for it to get that is to be constantly exposed to air.

Need help with drip tray advice too. What should I make it out of besides ordering up some expensive acrylic? Any ideas?

depends on the shape of the container you are using to hold your bio media. you want something that will fit over the top but also act as a shallow pan (raised edges) so water is forced to go thru your holes (that i guess you will be drilling)

so something like a modified kitty litter pan ?

Anyone have a good compilation of sump blue prints? or blueprints using scrubbies.

Yep, got that. But what do you suggest for that? There has got to be something readily available for another purpose that would work well that I could drill holes into. Like scrubbies and egg crate, this stuff wasn't technically made for aquariums but work well for the application. What can I use for a drip tray? My filter material should be here in the next few days. Thanks.
