Sump Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on who you ask, some say a tank turn over of 3x an hour others will say as high as 10x an hour. I believe the general concensous is slower is better around 3-6x an hour.

It depends on the application too.

It depends on what type of fish you have, too. A sump with a slower turnover rate will benifit from better bio filtration. My largest tank has a couple of large pacus that take one sh** and fog out the whole tank. I have a much higher turnover rate on this tank, so I can use more mechanical filtration to keep the debris out of the tank.

If you want SPS corals you really need more like 20x turnover but that is including powerheads, closed loop and whatever other pumps you have running.
