Sump quick question

do you guys put anything in the submerged part of your sumps? like lava rock maybe?

Ive got some porous media (like lava rock), some filter matting, sponge and some gravel that i took out of the tank it is filtering.

i leave it bare

whenever i do that **** start to build up and i get nitrate problems

alright, i guess its not worth it. ill just addmore media to the existing

mine is bare, but im thinking about putting some fishes down there
