Just putting together the filtration for my new 120. This is a 50gal tank I'm converting. Water comes in through some 4" industrial filter socks, goes into the RUGF in the refugium area (there will be some snails and plants in here, possibly some breeding feeders.) then over the overflow, through a drip plate over the bio media, and pumped back into the tank. Any thoughts?

Oh and I apologise for the paint shop butchery... it makes everything look like the author needs to wear a helmet in public.

On a more serious note...

What mesh size filter socks?

Rooted plants do better in a UGF as it draws nutrients down to the roots. Anacharis, hornwart and other 'floating' plants will work tho. May need to add some lighting (top or side).

Breeding feeders in a refugium is detrimental to the whole effect of the filter (introduced fish waste & food), plus the fry will go right thru the filter system (at least to the pump...eewww).

Probably 100micron filters. I had good results with those before on my 200gal setup. I figure whether it's RUGF or UGF, the dirty water will be flowing past the roots... we'll see how it works I guess. I'm planning on having lighting on the underside of the stand on a timer so the lights are on over the plants for 12hours a day (night).

Good point on the fry in the pump. Hmm. Maybe just snails.

interesting...let us know how it turns out

So the water is not forced through the RUGF? wouldn't it work better if it was forced?

Just a thought.

Great idea though

hmm...

(sorry)

only one way to find out! keep us posted
