I'm trying to decide the best way to set up the return line for my sump. I'm replacing my old rio 2100 return pump with a quiet one 4000. I'm going to use the 4000 as a submerged pump. The difference in outlet sizes has created a couple of questions about the best way to plumb the return.

First question is what to most people use under these pumps to quiet vibration?

Would running the return using all hard pipe be quieter then using flexible pipe?

Should I put a union close to the pump for future cleaning?

Does anyone use check valves inline in case of power failure?

Will the check valve reduce the flow rate significantly?

I know that the check valve shouldn't be needed if the return isn't lower then the intake for the sump.

Some pics of your returns might be helpful. I just really don't want to do this more then once.

You can use neoprene foam such as a mouse pad or camping pad, but they will float. A better choice is scrubbies or a plastic scrub pad (not the kind sold with cleaners already in them).

No, hose is quieter.

You'll be glad you did, but it isn't really needed. On the output, use a hose barb with a threaded end (you don't have a choice with the threaded end). When you need to service the pump, you can just unthread it or remove the hose from the barb.

You can, but it is best to plumb it to not need them. They are just one more thing that can fail later. You won't know that they are bad until the day that you really need them.

Most of the time, yes. There are some new low pressure springs in some of the high end check valves. You can also get what is called a flapper check valve that doesn't have a spring. It has a weight instead (still causes restriction).

here is how i do them, i sleep in the same room (beside my bed), so it is very quiet.

-i use a floss under the mag 18
-i use flex pipe, because there is no water draining echo, which means no noise
-return don't hit the canopy so there is no sound on that

** the only sound it has is water going in the overflow, i actually test it with "sound measurement" it only creates 15DB (average person snore i believe is 40DB and i can't sleep if somebody snores) therefore i am able to sleep :D
