I have a 4x2x1 sump for my 200gal. Currently the order is bio balls-4 filter pads-I've steriliser - filter sock- 1more open sponge and then the return. There's around 60 bio balls 2 inch. Is there a better way? More I could add? The water is clean and parameters are good with weekly 30% water change but looking to get a Motoro so want the best possible

thanks

Filter sock should be first to catch all the crud in the tank, its the mechanical filtration, then add sponges to additionally filter it mechanicaly, then work on the Bio needs, Bio goes after as all the crap and large particles can clog up Bio media. I run 4 filter socks, some submerged pond matrix and now building a fluid bed filter into my sump. Keep it simple, with rays you will need allot of mechanical filtration and good Bio. Fresh water is key after that.

Any of them will work period as long as they are used in right amound and taken care of (meaning dont get crud built up on them) Bio balls seem to be older technology this day but work fine, A friend of mine really likes his pot scrubbies, I do not, He did just started using some ceramic rings and likes them. I use to have bio balls in my system but removed them because I was putting in the reactor (flud bed), After removing about 35 gallons of sumbmerged and drip plated bio balls the 8 liters of pond matrix was able to take over after they were removed and I saw no water spikes, so It really makes me wonder if the bio balls were really doing anything much. Pond matrix is kinda like ceramic rings that would be my choice. Real key to a ray it feed a large amount but not crazy too much and lots and lots of fresh water and allot of mechanical filtration to keep the tank clean. At least that is my input.

So for a ray (male Motoro) am I best with bio balls, ceramic rings of scrubbies?

So great full of your help on this! How long have you been keeping rays for? Yours looks awesome. Would you advise literally filling my sump or would that reduce the water flow too much? I've looked at a local stockist who says I need what I've worked out as around £50 worth so it's a lot but more than worth it. The ray I'm looking to get is still in quarantine at the lfs at the moment so will be around 6.5 inches at the moment. We can get black worms hear but we can get meal worms, good replacement? Or any other alternatives. Also (really sorry) But how often do you change your water and how much? What do you keep with your ray?

many thanks
