hello,
i am purchasing a 130 gallon tank with a 25 gallon used for sump but there are not holes drilled for the sump so he said i need an external box for sump? an suggestions? also any quick tips or advice for newbie to sumps would be great... i have used as large as FX5 so i know about large filtration never sump...
thank you
glenn

he means you need an external overflow for your sump, check out the diy section, theres a lot of easy to make plans for a overflow out of pvc. Once you make sense of the overflow it shouldn't be too hard to make.

ok fair enough...for a 130 gallon tank do you really think that a sump would be a smarter option then say... a fx5 or larger canister filter??
thanks
Glenn

the smartest option is whatever suits you best, needs and budget. look at the pros and cons of each and decide which ticks more boxes for you. only you know how much money you can stretch too and only you know exactly what you want from your filtration.

did he leave u a pump with that sump? If you have a decent pump already it wont be expensive at all to make an overflow, if you dont have a pump, im not sure what would be cheapest

Not to put you off of the sump, but for someone starting out I would recommend an “out of the box” filter system.
After you do some research and become more comfortable with your tank and how easier to work with filters work, then you could look into getting a sump system working for you.

i agree. if you re just starting. then be careful. i you're not sure then stick with what is proven to work.then go with a diy sump.i have a 150 gal. and im only using 2 power head's & a swimming pool pump.

yeah for the size of tank i will have i am just going to stick with canisters and double up on them if need be... at least i know how they work and i am comfortable with working cleaning and operating them.
Thanks
Glenn

probably the best way to go, i was just wondering if you had the pump already, because it would probably be the cheapest way to go if you had all the materials.
