I might be getting a new big tank and I've decided to make a sump for it. My question is how many gallons of sump to gallons of aquarium should there be? Or how many gallons should pump through the sump per hour? Or do you all measure it some other way? This will be might first sump and I have no clue.

This will all depend on how big the tank is and what you plan on stocking. Let us know when you get a size in mind.

id go for a sump thats holds about 25-30% of the tanks volume

I would do no less than a 30G for the sump. It would probably be easier to just use an old 55G tank. That way, there's no question.
