How do you determine how many gallons you have for your sump to how many gallons your aquarium is?

The more media the better. Not sure if there's a right way people put canisters in their big tanks so that's like less than 10 gallons of media so any sump will hold far more media than any canister. That being said people usually do 40-60 gallon sumps on 180+ tanks

There is no right or wrong sump size as long as it holds all the media you want it to, can account for power outage situation, and easy to maintain. 40-75 gallon is most popular

Manufacturers typically rate their skimmers for certain sized aquariums. Also depends in part on what your are keeping for stock in your tank.
