Well I might be making another sump for my 55 gallon and I was wondering if anyone else have there sumps to have a smell. The last sump I had made had a smell that my parents didn't like so I was forced to tear down the whole thing and I don't wanna put all my effort into it again only to find it smelling again. Was it just because it was cycling? Would the smell go away? :nilly:

I don't know man. You must of done something wrong. None of my sumps have ever smelled? Maybe you can add a lid?

if it was a "foot" smell it was nitrites.. do more waterchanges
if it was a "pee" smell it was ammonia.. do more waterchanges and put a prefilter on your overflow (sponge) to keep food from collecting and rotting in the sump

o have not cleaned my sump it almost a year.. these are the only two smells ive gotten from it.. both were my own fault..

was there any build up in your sump?
the smell could be from a unfiltered corner of your sump

try to cycle the whole sump if your sump is big but a jet in the back of it

but since it was for a 55 i dont think you needed a sump

Thats what I was thinking as well... I did put in a coffee filter for my "fine" filter and forgot about it for like 3 days or so and it had started to decompose so thats what I figured it was. I just wanted to check and see if there anything else that might have caused the smell. I did have a lid on my tubberware container that as a trickle onto my actual media, the media didn't have a lid though.

It was kind of a mix of the two, I couldn't smell it because the tank is in my room and I must have gotten used to it but my dad noticed it and apprentely it "stuck up the whole house" lol
