I am setting up a sump on my 210 and i wanted to know what turnover rate you guys are using for your sumps. I've read some people using 10x and others using 3x. Looking to buy a pump, and was wondering how big of one to get. Thanks all. :)

i would go with 5-10x im setting up a 75 and im using a 642gph pump. gives me about 8.5x turn over

Are your heaters in your tank or are you going to put them in the sump?

What size sump? 20g-40g-50g?

If your bio-load is going to be heavy, naturally go with the higher rate. It will also help with algae control and general clarity.

So many variables or reasons for running at different rates, but mostly can't go wrong at the higher rates.

Let's see some pics,

Dr Joe

If the flow in the tank is not more than the fish can stand, then go higher..

I say never less than 6 turns, but I have seen lower with small bio-loads.

i might set up a wet dry filter and i was wondering waht are turns? what is 10X and 5X and stuff you guyz talkin about

lets say your tank is 200 gallons

if you want a 10x (times) turn over rate

just multiply the 200 times the number of times you want the pump so "turn over" the tank

lets say you want the pump to turn the tank over ten times

thats 2000gph (200x10)

so you would need pump with a 2000 gph flow rate to do the job

1000 if you want it to do it 5 times.

im a noob at wet dry waht do you mean "turn over" wahts so good about taht?

turn over means the whole tanks volume going through the filter. if you have a 100gal tank and your filter is rated 1000gal. then the tank turns over 10 times. ie 1000gal (pump flow rate) / 100gal tank size= 10x (times).

another way to put it is how many times you could fill your tank using the pump if it were pumping water from a limitless source. 1000gal pump could fill 10 100gal tanks in an hour.

hope this clears it up a bit.

Are you guys using display tank vol. or total system vol. in your calculations?
