Those of you who have large sumps under your stands, how wide and how tall would you be comfortable going?
For example, on something like an 8x4 or 10x4 - how big would you be willing to go?

as big as you can fit. the main thing of your sump would be height as you will still need to get in there for maint. or when going that large you can do as I did and just add another tank to take up the whole floor plan. then instead of a sump convert a sand filter out to the side and add filters above the tanks.

What is your aim for a sump?

* For filtration, the sump can be very small.
* For increasing water volume, the sump can be split into inter connected tanks possibly on rollers for manageability if 4 foot width.

For water clarity on a 10,000 L tank, I use a 5000L rain water poly tank outside the room as a water settlement area. Drop the water velocity and take water from the clean clear upper section. Very simple, no moving parts, effective if your layout permits.
