sump-wet/dry filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
only as much water thats pumped into the tanks from the sump box will over flow back into the sump so it never really spills .....
one lesson i learned is not to have the nozzle of the return pump submersed when the sump box is stopped it siphons the water back out and might over flow the sump box

My 100G has a small overflow box on one side of what I'll call the main tank. The overflow box holds about 10G of water. As water is pumped into the main tank, one edge of it is lower allowing water to pour over and into the over flow box. This water rises and then drains down an open tube of some sort into the sump below.

On my wet/dry filter, water that is drained down the overflow tube passes through a piece of filter foam, through 2 layers of carbon, through 1 layer of peat, and onto a large biomass cylinder. This clean water then fills the "sump" below, mine being about 30G. Inside of the 30G sump I have a pump that move this sump water up a tube and into the main tank again. This raises the level in the main tank... which overflows into the overflow box, and on and on.

Make sense?

The best improvement you can make to the system is to place a check valve inline with the pump output. This way, if you lose power, the siphoning effect from the output nozzles doesn't flow backwards and overflow your sump. In general, it is terrifying to custom build, but it is easy to keep the tank healthy with that much water movement and extra volume.

They are also great for hiding equipment. All of my CO2 tanks, heaters, sensors, etc. are in the sump.

I would be happy to look over a design if you have one. I just went through this...
