I made some room for a sump for my 500. I have been looking around on the net and see all sorts, configs, etc.

What are the most popular and reliable brands and configs? How big of a sump do I need for my 500?

This is my current load of fish in the 500

Tank is acrylic and I do have room now for an overflow box.

I need to know:

What overflow box to get?
Which brand sump?
How big should the sump be?
How to make it flood proof?
What size pump should I use?
Should I use a check valve?
I see people talking about an air hole the make above the water line in the hose...which hose gets the hole, where should it be located, how big, etc.
How many compartments should I have?
What media is the best to use?
Should I use a sock or socks?
If the electric shuts off, what should happen?

Current filtration is 3 Emperor 400's, each filter uses 4 filter pads at once, 2 in each compartment. Water is crystal clear, no more brown, cloudy water BUT... when feeding shrimp the smell is very bad. The smell comes about 15 mins after feeding. I'm assuming this is because bacteria has not established yet, maybe Im wrong. I use the bio-wheels as well. They all three have been running for a month now. When I use pellets, the smell is hardly there but you can smell it.

Thanks!
