So I'm coming upon a sweet deal on a 250g saltwater tank that will be converted over to freshwater.

I plan on finding a 55 or 75 gallon to use for the sump. Has anyone ever designed a sump with an area to grow out smaller fish? I know this will take away from bio media but you never know when it will come in handy..

I grow out fry in my sumps all the time. Make a compartment for pumps and other gear, and plant the open area for extra nitrate reduction, and put fry in that area.

The above pic, is during a water change, you can see the pump section in the upper corner.
Some Paratheraps breidori fry, and a few others are growing in it now.

Thats exactly what I was looking to do. Any more info or full pics of your sump?

Tank overflows into a barrel which overflows into the planted sump, to add extra water volume.

Filter socks catch debris from main tank, before overflowing to planted sump.
I use the barrel, to hold large fish if too aggressive, or beat up.

No biowheel, because the plants and substrate are enough.
