Everyone likes pics so I will start with that!
I bought a tank that had a sump the previous owner was using just to grow some plants so I made a few changes (added bio-balls, a drip plate, Purigen, some floss etc.) to try to make it better. Most of the bioballs I have now are the coralife and float but I also have some Oceanic which sink to the bottom.
I was wondering what you guys thought and if there was anything you thought I could do to improve it easily without major modifications to the sump?
The pump (not sure what it is) matches the overflow rate and in the event of an outage the sump will not overflow.
Seems to work great with the two Rena Flistars I have running as well (XP3 and XP2). My tap water comes out at ~15PPM nitrates and after a week in the tank my water is only reading about ~20PPM! I am not sure if it is the purigen or the plants finally starting to really grow but this is a HUGE improvement (it used to go to about 20~30 in a day!)
Also, right now the plants that are growing are the bulbs you can buy at most walmarts and petstores that you bury in the gravel and sprout. What other plants should I look into to really get at the nitrates but are simple and just need the water and lights?
Do plants need a day/night schedule or should I leave the lights on 24/7?
