im planning to make my 20g growout into a sump.
could i use a pump from the main tank to draw water into the 20g and another pump to draw the water back into the main tank?
cause i dont wanna drill a hole in my main tank.
also, could any fish live in the sump as a growout?
therell be enough room for the fish.

Yes and yes:)

Isnt that a little big for a 20 gallon?

yes.
but theres other filters in the main tank.
i tried but failed.
both pumps are excactly the same.
the main tank kept sucking all the water from the smaler tank.
and the pumps are excactly the same!

no and no. no 2 pumps are the same. firstly the one on the bottom will be slower then the one in the tank and also you will have a difference due to cloging, unevenness in hose etc.

He can use valves for adjusting.

thats what i thought...
anyone have any suggestions on how to make a sump without needing to drill a hole in my tank?

two pumps will never work, even if you get em "in sync" with valves or whatnot over time they will start pumping at different rates which will lead to didaster. you can either buy an overflow box or look in the DIY section for DIY overflows.
